Acosta Canton

Acosta is the name of the 12th canton in the province of San José in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 242.24 km²[1], and has a population of 19,342[2]. The capital city of the canton is San Ignacio.

The mountainous canton begins in the Cerros de Escazú on the far western edge of the San José Metropolitan Area. It continues west and south between the Río Negro on the north and the Río Jorco on the east to encompass a large portion of the Coastal Mountain Range, finally ending at the border of Puntarenas Province near the Pacific coast in Parrita Canton.

The canton of Acosta is subdivided into five districts (distritos):[3]

  2. Guaitil
  3. Palmichal
  4. Cangrejal
  5. Sabanillas

History

The canton was established by law on October 27, 1910.
